My family always said they took the “z” off our last name at Ellis Island but I don’t know if that is true of if Franz is a distant relative. I first learned about ‘Nuages Gris’ or “Grey Clouds’ while I was in college and even played an arrangement of it. I figured it would be one of the few Liszt pieces I could play since so much of his work was virtuosic piano music. It was written towards the end of Franz Liszt's life in 1881 and is less about virtuosity and harmonically pushes more towards the 20th century. The mood of ‘Grey Clouds’ fit well with this collection and the feel in the early Spring of lockdown.
