about
Apartment House 1776 was written by Cage for an event that celebrated the U.S. bicentennial in 1976. It took music from 18th century America and smashed it all together. Part of that project was 44 Harmonies that were taken from American songs and somewhat “deconstructed.” We are left with the essence of these pieces where you can tell where it is from but not any details. Almost like the ghost of the song. I was unaware of these pieces but Spotify lead me to the Arditti Quartet recording of all 44 Harmonies. I used the Arditti arrangements to multitrack myself playing the different parts on vibraphone. The space and melodic line in this movement caught my attention and it seemed appropriate to include a funeral anthem as so many were dying due to COVID 19.
